Background of the Study
Nigeria is characterized by its vast linguistic diversity, with over 500 languages that have diverged historically due to geographical, cultural, and social isolation. Historical language divergence refers to the process by which related languages or dialects evolve separately over time, leading to distinct linguistic identities (Adebayo, 2023). Ethnographic records, colonial documents, and oral histories reveal that migration, trade, and intergroup conflict have all contributed to the divergence of languages among Nigerian ethnic groups (Okonkwo, 2024). Such divergence is not merely lexical but also involves syntactic, phonological, and pragmatic differences. The study of language divergence provides insight into the historical relationships among ethnic groups and informs current language policy and preservation strategies (Chinwe, 2025). Despite these insights, systematic analyses that compare divergent linguistic features across multiple ethnic groups are scarce. This study investigates historical language divergence by examining comparative data from selected ethnic groups, aiming to reveal patterns of language change and the sociocultural factors that have driven divergence.
Statement of the Problem
Although language divergence among Nigerian ethnic groups is widely acknowledged, comprehensive comparative studies remain limited. Existing research often focuses on individual languages without addressing the broader dynamics of divergence across groups (Adebayo, 2023). The lack of integrated analyses hampers our understanding of how historical events, migrations, and cultural isolation have contributed to linguistic diversity, thereby limiting effective language planning and preservation initiatives (Okonkwo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides a comparative analysis of historical language divergence among Nigerian ethnic groups, enhancing our understanding of linguistic diversity. The findings will inform language policy and preservation efforts, contributing to more inclusive strategies that acknowledge the rich historical dynamics of Nigeria’s multilingual society. Researchers, educators, and policymakers will benefit from the insights provided.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to selected Nigerian ethnic groups and does not extend to all languages in Nigeria or other aspects of language change.
